The decision was made in line with "current intelligence and previous incidents, including violent clashes and hate crime offenses that occurred during the 2024 UEFA Europa League match between Ajax and Maccabi Tel-Aviv in Amsterdam," said a statement Thursday from the West Midlands Police force, which covers Birmingham. The decision to block Israeli visiting supporters also came just weeks after a deadly terror attack on a synagogue in the northeast England city of Manchester. Two Jewish men were killed and three others seriously injured during the attack, which happened on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish religious calendar.
So, it's not the protesters advocating violence that is the problem, it's the attendees. Hmmmm.
Equally bizarre was Australian PM Anthony Albanese's initial press release following the Bondi Beach massacre. Albanese forgets to mention the target of the attack, completely omitting the fish shot up in this particular barrel were Jews gathered to celebrate the first night of Hanukkah.

This attack was not random. It wasn’t an eruption of private madness. It was deliberate. Jews were targeted on a Jewish holiday, in broad daylight, in a public place. This matters. When we blur that fact, we betray the dead.
The method chosen by the murderers should also trouble us deeply. Families were gathered in joy when men with guns got out of a car and began firing. The violence arrived with speed and cruelty, and though the scale differs, the pattern is unmistakable; it mirrors October 7 in Israel. A holiday. A crowd. Daylight. Attackers who targeted the most vulnerable, and knew precisely what they were doing.
If I read you the intersectionality statement from the Durham Community Fridge people you would puke. Yep, the queer people of Durham declare intersectionality between themselves and the Palestinians of Gaza. I was blasted at my neighborhood book club by a lesbian with whom I attempted allyship by pointing out that her constant existential dread was something I too was familiar with. This woman, a retired professor with a Ph.D. in history, told me I have nothing to worry about because Trump loves Israel, thereby conflating "all Israeli policy" with "all Jews."
ReplyDeleteAs a secular Jew with an Italian last name, I feel more alone than ever -- an alien in Jewish spaces, loathed everywhere else.
You are so not alone and you don't even realize it. Jews don't come in one size, shape, color, belief, sexuality, beliefs, or damn near anything else. Communities spring up to meet the needs of a community. And of one doesn't fit the bill, then find a different one. In person, on line, wherever.
ReplyDeleteGo to Israel and experience the spectrum of Jews. It's a veritable rainbow there and I don't mean just a rainbow flag, although there's plenty of that, too. But do not think for one New York minute that you are a solo act.
There are plenty of Jews with Italian last names. Some are even Italian. Lots of Jews have no religious education or observance. Secular Jews are everywhere and other than some ultra-orthos, no one cares because Jews are Jews.
You know how I feel about labels; they are unnecessarily destructive and isolating. You don't have to have a label; just be. Mebbe it's time for a visit to this neck of the woods. You'd be amazed at the places you belong.
As for Feckless President Felon, he loves Jews only as far as he can stretch a wallet. That professor is simply an idiot; don't listen to her flagrant lack of intelligence.
He doesn't love Jews. He loves votes from his Evangilistic Christians. They say they love Israel, but it is because they hope the Messiah comes soon, not for any other reason, but he needs to make them think he supports them about Israel and Jews to get their votes. His supporters probalby don't love Jews either. He only loves himself.
